Reigate & Banstead District Sports Council Awards 2020 – Club Official of the Year

Sam Cates, Redhill Bowling Club

Sam started bowling at the age of 13 and began to play Club matches and competitions in his second season.

He reached his first final in 2012 and in 2014 joined the Committee as Junior Representative.  He remains a Committee Member to date.  Also in 2014 he became a Green Steward which involves opening and closing the club, preparing the green equipment and helping to run the bar.

In 2016 whilst studying for his degree, he became Vice-Captain as well as Competition Secretary, he organised the catering rota and became one of the Club’s first qualified First Aiders.  In 2017 he continued as Vice-Captain as well as completing his final year at University.  He also took on the role of Welfare and Safeguarding Officer, reached the semi-final of the Surrey Under 25’s Pairs competition and was called up for Surrey Under 25 Squad.

In 2017 he was elected as Men’s Captain and during the last season he was called up and presented his London-Scottish shirt and badge.  He has been given this outstanding honour of representing and carrying on the Scottish heritage of his family.  Since being called up he has played in 2 mini internationals, coming runner up in both.
