Reigate & Banstead District Sports Council Awards 2020 – Young Volunteer of the Year – The Robin Elsdon-Dew Trophy

Benjamin Turrington, Reigate Football Club

Benjamin has been one of the U6 coaches for Reigate Football Club for the past 4 seasons.  The Club’s 32 U6s train every Saturday in Priory Park and he is there every week in all weathers.  The children love his enthusiasm and he makes even the coldest or wettest days fun.  We are seeing record attendances and a large part of this is due to the children wanting to see their Coach.

The Club uses the U6s to introduce children of all abilities to football and he is able to adapt his approach depending on the ability level of the group he takes.  The Club also uses the U6s to find future parent coaches to take the U6s into U7s and beyond.  This means that a large part of the role of coaching the U6s is actually coaching future coaches, many of whom have no experience of coaching sport and are all older parent coaches.  Over the past year, he has increased his involvement in this area by working with the adults to provide them with the skills they need.
